CREADIS > Haldor Topsoe - Hydro processing plant

CREADIS is trusted to execute a large-scale plant project for Haldor Topsoe in the US 

                                     

In 2020, Haldor Topsoe had a unique request for CREADIS; to assist in the development of a 15,000-ton hydro processing catalyst plant in Pasadena, Texas, and to have it fully operating in 2023.

 

In all industrial markets, a well-known and critical key factor in establishing cost-effective and profitable projects is time to market. To be able to ramp up complex plant facilities is a necessity for getting access to these markets. So, when Haldor Topsoe decided to invest in increasing their production capacity, CREADIS was, from the beginning, focused on aligning expectations and preparing for an effective execution process to make sure that time and quality were equally balanced.

 

 

Solid foundation
As CREADIS for years has been assisting clients in establishing production and process facilities globally, CREADIS has built up a strong understanding of what elements need to be in place to ensure flexible and agile cooperation. This was one of the reasons why Haldor Topsoe chose CREADIS as their partner. Also, as the two companies have a long history of collaborating on various projects, the foundation was built on mutual trust.

Successful execution
This time, the project's scope was unlike other projects CREADIS had done for Haldor Topsoe. From the concept phase to commissioning, CREADIS is responsible for all engineering and supervision activities of the project. The new plant will deliver products for traditional refining and for use with Topsoe's HydroFlex™ technology to produce renewable diesel and jet fuel.
To avoid unnecessary loss of time in establishing the cooperation, CREADIS incorporated workflows to complement Topsoe's, acting as their extended arm. By doing so, it was possible to integrate engineering capabilities in Poland and bring local knowledge about regulatory requirements, permissions, etc., from a US-based civil engineering consultancy company named Dewberry. This was done while working closely with Topsoe in Denmark.

Adapt and overcome
One could argue that taking on such a large, complex project in the middle of a global pandemic would be too risky and challenging.
Nevertheless, in the summer of 2020, CREADIS and Haldor Topsoe signed the collaboration agreement. In the months after, the project teams from all companies were not able to physically meet or travel to the US or Poland. Consequently, CREADIS set up a strong team of project leads whose job was to encounter the challenges, especially communicational and technical. With a clear set of roles & responsibilities across three countries, CREADIS was able to make effective and quick decisions from the early kick-off phase to ensure that the project was going forward as planned.
Working in a project environment with many changes, good communication helped compensate for the lack of physical presence without compromising quality and milestones.
